- Well - it was toss up whether to go very early in the morning and only have an hour or two favourable going round Start Point or whether to go more traditional and reach SP at slack tide and then going west. The trouble with the later option is that the wind was forecast to grow later in the day and that delays might mean getting into Plymouth after dark. As it was, leaving at 04:40 worked way better than expected with gentle sailing down to Start Point (and 3.5m over the low water Skerries) and and easy inshore passage around Start Point. What was somewhat odd was the a) strength of following tide down to Start Point b) the the slack tide at Start c) followed by a knot and a half of adverse tide west of Start and then very little adverse tide until well after Bolt Head. Which all helped us greatly. Then a lovely sail across Bigbury Bay and into QAB, Plymouth way before expected. And then a fragrant Cross Country train back towards Exeter!
