- Description
-
A fairly fast run across from Salcombe to Falmouth in Derek H's Westerly Fulmar 32 - Thalmia.

The wind was not quite as far to the north west as hoped for so we mostly sailed and then motor sailed every so often to get back to roughly the track we wanted to be on.

After a short break heaving to, we found that the windward side (i.e. loose) genoa sheet had wrapped itself well and truly under the tender / valise being carried on the foredeck. The height and the quite short period of the wind driven waves meant that spending a long time on the foredeck sorting it out was unappealing (even when clipped on). Besides - we didn't need it for where we were going :-)

However, a short while later the next challenge was noticing that when heeled over the side of the cabin sole was somewhat under salt water. It was soon pretty clear that it wasn't increasing in depth at any real rate and Derek figured out it was via the anchor chain locker receiving some water due to the short steep seas we were spending a lot of time bashing through (later analysis found that a "plug" to minimise this type of water ingress has become dislodged). So not enough to even bother levelling the boat on the motor to pump out the bilges but it was a little unsettling when initially seen!

Unfortunately, around about this time, one of the flexible perspex(?) panes in the sprayhood split. Irritating for Derek especially - but it was the downwind one so it didn't mean any extra spray coming into the cockpit.

Then into Falmouth and moored up for the night on a pontoon at Falmouth Haven marina.

And then top fish and chips and a Rattler at The Harbour Lights fish and chips restaurant.

Two days to get from the Exe to Falmouth is pretty good going in my book albeit Derek H has often done it in the past on the way down to The Scillies.
