Description
After a day's delay to let strong winds go through, we exited Victoria Marina over the cill at about 04:10. The Little Russel was very calm with only a few pot buoys to contend with. After an all too brief 20 minutes of excellent sailing, the wind died away to almost nothing. With strong north easterly going tides, we motored towards the TSS. Unfortunately one of the 3 yachts suffered an engine failure (which turned out to be due to a physical blockage from the fuel tank - not diesel bug related). With no wind to sail by and with the tides flowing towards the Casquet rocks, the decision was made to make a pan pan call to the coastguard. A short while later, the Alderney all weather lifeboat was launched to tow the yacht to Braye harbour. Before starting the tow, the lifeboat very kindly transferred one of the crew from the yacht to Thalmia - the crew needed to be back in the UK for work the next day. With no wind and only some swell, I think the lifeboat team were happy to help and get a bit of practice in at the same time. After that, crossing the TSS was straightforward (with one vessel contacted on CH13 to confirm they'd seen us and were happy for us to continue as the stand on vessel). Because of the delay as we stood by the "poorly" yacht, we were late getting back to the Exe which meant that we went up the Exe half way through a falling Spring tide and in the dark - so not really ideal! However, it all went well and Thalmia was back on her mooring at SYC by about 22:15.
